A RICH TEXAS HISTORY
Jana Duty’s family roots trace back to the earliest days of our Texas history. She is a direct descendant of Joseph Duty, one of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old Three Hundred” settlers. Joseph was born in Tennessee in March of 1801. He received a title to a league of land in Texas from the Mexican government in 1824, and eventually settled with his family at Webberville in Travis County.
One of Joseph’s brothers, Matthew, was given hero status after risking his life to save an 11-year old boy, William Watts Hornsby, during an ambush by over 150 Comanche Indians. Matthew was killed a few weeks later, but the young boy he saved went on to start a family of his own that eventually produced baseball legend Rogers Hornsby.
Jana also had four ancestors who fought in the Texas Revolution, including two who participated in the final victorious battle at San Jacinto. In fact, the Duty family has had at least one member fight in every conflict that Texas has ever been a part of.
The Duty family has served Texas for nearly two centuries, and Jana has continued that record of service as a licensed foster parent, a High School English teacher, a prosecutor in Bexar and Williamson counties and, since 2005, as our County Attorney. She has worked tirelessly to protect our families and take on the good old boy system at the courthouse.
